What is Direct Funding?

Self-Managed Attendant Services in Ontario!

Direct Funding is an innovative program enabling adults with physical disabilities to become employers of their own attendants. Attendants assist with routine activities of living, such as dressing, grooming and bathing. As employers, participants are fully responsible for managing their own employees within a budget that is developed on an individual basis.

Amanda Fitzhenry

Before joining the ILSM team in 2022, Amanda graduated from Cambrian College with a diploma in Social Services - Indigenous Specialization. She developed a deep passion for helping others and a renewed appreciation for Anishinabek Culture. Amanda initially worked as ILSM's Volunteer Coordinator before transitioning into the role of Direct Funding Coordinator.

In her current role, Amanda has had the opportunity to connect with the community and share the Independent Living Philosophy, as well as promote the unique Direct Funding program. As the Direct Funding Coordinator, Amanda provides support to applicants throughout their journey to become eligible for the program, with the ultimate goal of helping them become Self-Manager of their own attendant care.

How does Direct Funding work?

THE APPLICATION PROCESS!

Through the Direct Funding Program, people with disabilities become the employers and self-managers, taking full responsibility for hiring and managing their own attendants and determining how and when their services are provided. The program is portable, meaning participants can live and travel anywhere within the province of Ontario, taking their services along with them. However, application process is the most important step!

The first step is to fill out the application form! This can be found by clicking the 'download the application' button on the bottom of this page, or directly on the Direct Funding website! Your local ILRC (Independent Living Resource Center) can assist you with filling out the paperwork!

The Eligibility interview is very important. You, the applicant, will present your application and discuss how you believe your knowledge and experience demonstrate your ability to self-manage your attendants.

Our Direct Funding Coordinator will provide a study manual, as well as other additional resources in order to prepare for your interview! A hybrid style (online and in person) study group is also available.

After the interview, you will be put on a waiting list in order to review your eligibility. If you are eligible for the program, you will be sent a standard agreement to sign. You will also receive a comprehensive resource kit which includes instructions on how to get started. You will receive tips on recruiting, employing and supervising your own attendants, and managing your finances, as well as information on employment and tax laws, employer/employee relations, labour and employment standards, payroll issues and accounting procedures.
